 APPRENTICE SUPPORT WORKERS

We are looking to recruit resilient, committed, energetic and highly motivated Apprentice Support Workers who will relish the opportunity to develop their own practice within one of the UK’s most diverse educational organisations.

New Bridge Horizons is part of the New Bridge Group which includes New Bridge School, Hollinwood Academy, Spring Brook Academy and Hawthorns School. We are a day provision for disabled adults aged 19+ years based at Medtia Square, Oldham town centre.

The role is primarily to support disabled adults aged 19+ years to access social and community activities based within New Bridge Horizons. The duties will be to help to meet the needs of our young people by providing a range of support within independent living, accessing employment opportunities and leisure activities. The support will be based on the needs as determined by the young person.

Previous experience in a caring or similar environment would be an advantage but we will provide training for the right candidate.

Main Duties include:·

  • Establishing rapport and respectful, trusting relationships with the young people, being aware of and responding to individual need
  • Assisting the young people to maximise their potential and achieve their individual targets, promoting self-esteem and enabling them to become as independent as possible
  • Promoting inclusion and acceptance of all Supervising and supporting young people, ensuring their safety and that all young people have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Undertaking personal care tasks in a dignified and respectful manner to a high standard
  • Supporting key workers in managing young people’s behaviour
  • Providing feedback on young people’s personal needs
  • Accompanying young people on trips and activities in and around the community
  • Maintaining contact with carers, families and relevant professionals
  • Preparing the environment for activities and clearing away afterwards including the provision of resources

Key skills and abilities: 

  • To be able to demonstrate empathy with young people who have a range of learning and physical needs
  • The ability to work as part of a dedicated team
  • The ability to relate well to young people in supporting them with their individual needs
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Physical resilience to be able to support the young people with mobility issues
  • The ability to lift manually and with any hoist equipment provided (after training)
  • The ability to follow care plans
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Familiar with the use of basic technology – computer, photocopier etc.
  • The confidence to work on and off site with young people

The successful candidates will be employed on a 12 or 18 month contract and complete a Health and Social Care diploma during that time. Whilst we are unable to guarantee a permanent contract at the end of the apprenticeship, we expect opportunities for permanent employment to become available.

Please note there is no age limit to access an apprenticeship. The apprenticeship pay rate applies for the first twelve months and then apprentices move onto their applicable statutory age rate. We would be particularly interested in male applicants.

Salary: New Bridge Apprenticeship Rate £8,774 (£4.59 p.h.)
Hours of work: 36 hours 40 minutes per week / full year
Based: Initially at New Bridge Horizons, Oldham town centre
