MENTOR – Career Guidance and Support Service

Do you want to join an exciting team, with great opportunities and challenges? Read on….

The Team:
We’re a great team, positive about young people and absolutely convinced we can make a difference to those we work with. You don’t have to take our word for it, in our MATRIX report 2019 stated that there were “strong links are evident between leadership style and the plan-do-review culture. Leadership and direction within the service ensures that the principles of continuous improvement are embedded.”

The Positive Steps team are a fantastic melting pot from all professional and personal backgrounds. They are however also singers, runners, entrepreneurs, cyclists and much more - we value diversity and want Positive Steps to be more than a place that you work; we’ll make sure it also feels like home. The role at the moment is for the Career Guidance and Support Services Team but Mentors can be deployed across the organisation to meet our service needs.Positive Steps is proud to be different; as a charitable organisation, we are the largest provider of career guidance services in Greater Manchester. The Career Guidance department has 3 teams geographically based in Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside but we also work in in schools across other parts of Manchester. We are commissioned to run Local Authority NEET contracts and we have a strong record of direct work in schools and colleges. Your work could involve you working across several boroughs and most staff hold a pre and post 16 locality based caseload.

Working for Positive Steps means can expect to be part of something bigger than a single service - opportunities to innovate and diversify are part of our culture and we run a range of other services aimed at children, young people and families.
We value our innovative approaches and this mean you will get the opportunity to help us shape and deliver a wide range of services, drawing upon not just career guidance but NLP techniques and work related learning opportunities.

The Role
As a Mentor you will be supporting young people to access and sustain education, employment and training opportunities. You will have a caseload and a range of duties to support the team and you will work closely with careers advisers to support those that need careers guidance. You will need to be ready for the challenge. We will need you to already have experience working with, and engaging with, young people and be ready to hit the ground running! We pride ourselves on our innovative work but also value robust quality standards.
Finally, you’ll need resilience and determination; we don’t accept that young people ‘don’t engage’; we change our approach until we find the right one. This might take three or thirty different approaches - you’ll need to be ready for that challenge!

We offer: membership of a pension scheme; annual leave from 34-39 days (including public holidays); flexible working arrangements; a voluntary benefits programme; learning and development opportunities; and a 36 hours week.
