Role Overview:

The primary goal of the Senior Network Engineer is to ensure the Council's primarily Cisco-based networks and business technology runs effectively and all opportunities to automate processes are taken to increase efficiency. The successful Senior Network Engineer will take a lead role in mapping and developing future strategies, continually seeking promoting and realising opportunities to optimise the network service. The Senior Network Engineer will also be involved in new project designs and technologies, provide operational support (which will include a 24/7 on-call rota), and assist with scripting, tooling and automation for network deployment, configuration and monitoring.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in projects as an infrastructure resource, providing recommendations and performing tasks as required.
  • Installing and maintaining LAN/WAN/Wireless networks and devices, conducting circuit and traffic analysis, troubleshooting any issues for firewalls and routing.
  • Conduct Proactive maintenance and administration of designated network services.
  • Monitor availability and utilisation and take appropriate action to report and correct any issues.
  • Collaborate with other IT service teams to ensure local IT assets are fully and effectively used.
  • Contribute to the development of best practise guidelines and technical recommendations.

 

Essential Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a LAN/WAN engineer in a large IT environment (400+ network devices).
  • Experience within a configuration, administration and troubleshooting experience of LAN switches, routers and firewalls (2960, 6500, N5K,N7K, N9K, 5500)
  • Knowledge of QoS and LAN traffic management techniques
  • Experience designing, deploying and configuring Telephony (VoIP)
  • Good knowledge of network management systems
  • Experience in Management / high level technical escalation
  • Professional certification - CCNP or CCDP

 

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of Meraki, SDN, VMWare, IaaS.
  • Solarwinds Network Management
